Bannockburn to Tyndrum

It was another fine and very hot day today, requiring liberal amounts of sun-blocker to be applied although my hands had already been quite badly burnt from being on the bars in full sunlight for the last few days. I got away from the White House at 9.10 and the ride to Tyndrum was very easy topographically with just one longish but not too steep hill just past Lochearnhead.

At Callander I stopped for a cup of tea and piece of cake at Munchy’s café. I think Munchy was the Liverpudlian who came over and chatted to me about the bike, telling me all about his own Lejog back in 1990. He was a bit stout and unfit looking now but back then he and his pal had done the trip in 10 days going by as direct a route as possible. Somewhere near Inverness his friend had crumpled his front wheel against a piece of timber which had fallen from a lorry but Munchy had taken it and bashed it back into shape in a small workshop attached to a petrol station. Very resourceful of him.

Seven miles further along I had a very indifferent cheese and tomato panini in Strathyre. It was getting very hot by the time I continued along the A85, west towards Crianlarich. Beyond there the final 5 miles up the A82 to Tyndrum, although easy terrain, were quite hard work because I was overheating so much. Under-hydrated probably.

I couldn’t get a phone signal in Tyndrum but I was able to send a text message to Trisha to let her know I was ok and it got through. I got a room at the Tyndrum Lodge Hotel (£33 inc breakfast) which is the place between the Green Welly and Paddy’s Pub. My evening meal in the bar was a vegetable balti with poppadom and rice, apple pie and custard and a pint of Fosters. That came to £16.45.
